On October 11, 2023, a conference was held at the Welsh Parliament to mark the World Day Against the Death Penalty and to critically assess Iran’s human rights record. The event brought together esteemed parliamentarians and delegates representing various Iranian communities across the United Kingdom. Its primary objective was to amplify the voice of solidarity with the ongoing civil unrest in Iran and to passionately advocate for the establishment of a democratic republic in the country.

The conference was spearheaded by Mark Isherwood, a prominent figure associated with the Conservative Party, who serves as the Shadow Minister for Social Justice. Notable speakers included Altaf Hussain, a Member of Parliament from the Conservative Party and the Shadow Minister for Equality, as well as Sam Rowlands, a fellow Conservative MP who holds the role of Shadow Minister for Local Government in Wales. The event also featured contributions from William Powell, a former representative of the Welsh Parliament, and Joseph Carter, a City Council member representing the Liberal Democrats.

In addition to political voices, representatives from diverse Iranian communities in the UK shared their personal experiences and testimonials.

The conference served as a call to action, drawing global attention to the widespread use of capital punishment by the current Iranian regime. It also expressed unwavering solidarity with the Iranian people’s resolute pursuit of democratic change. This gathering emerged as a crucial platform for dialogue, highlighting the indispensable role of international cooperation and support in the quest for fundamental freedoms and a democratic future for Iran.

Mark Isherwood, representing the Conservative Party as the Shadow Minister for Social Justice, emphasized the unanimous support for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its President-elect’s Ten-Point Plan, a stance endorsed by the majority of the Welsh Parliament. He underscored the urgency of addressing a quest for justice, notably referencing the 1988 massacre that claimed the lives of 30,000 political prisoners in Iran. Mr. Isherwood stressed the imperative of preventing the burial, both literal and figurative, of this atrocity. He expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Anglo-Iranian community to the Welsh Senators for their steadfast support and recognition.

Mr. Sam Rowlands, a Conservative Member of Parliament and the Shadow Minister for Local Government in Wales, offered his personal insights on the imperative for transformation in Iran. While recognizing the unique responsibilities held by the UK Parliament, Mr. Rowlands assured the audience of his and his colleagues’ unwavering dedication to creating a platform for the Iranian people’s aspirations, as outlined in the NCRI Ten-Point Plan. He emphasized the significance of working collaboratively with fellow lawmakers in Westminster and the UK government to provide the necessary support to the Anglo-Iranian community. He commended the organization for shining a spotlight on this vital issue and extended his warmest wishes for their efforts in catalyzing change in Iran.

Former Welsh Parliament representative, Mr. William Powell, acknowledged the profound historical importance of the conference and highlighted the wide-ranging impacts of the Mullahs’ regime and the unwavering determination of all parties within the Welsh Senate to maintain pressure on the regime.

Mr. Joseph Carter, a City Council member representing the Liberal Democrats, commended the event and stressed the paramount value of freedom. He highlighted how frequently Western societies take their freedoms for granted and called attention to influences that seek to undermine democracy, including actions by the current Iranian regime. Mr. Carter expressed deep admiration for the courage exhibited by Iranian women who stand up despite facing brutal repercussions. He applauded the global support for their cause and noted the bipartisan backing for their efforts.

Attendees from the Anglo-Iranian community took the opportunity to express their views and insights on the human rights situation in Iran. Their passionate testimonies strongly affirmed their resolute dedication to achieving a free and democratic republic in Iran.
