Flemish Parliament Urges EU Action to Prevent Executions of Iranian Political Prisoners

On April 2, 2025, Belgium’s Flemish Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the impending execution of two Iranian political prisoners, Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani. The resolution calls on European Union leaders—most notably European Council President Kaja Kallas—to deliver a strong and unequivocal message to Iranian authorities, demanding an immediate halt to the executions.

Passed during a plenary session, the resolution expresses grave concern over the blatantly unfair legal proceedings and credible reports of torture involving both prisoners. Ehsani and Hassani are currently held on death row in Ghezel Hesar prison after convictions widely denounced by international human rights organizations.

In its official statement, the Flemish Parliament urged coordinated diplomatic pressure at the EU level to avert what it described as a “serious miscarriage of justice.” The full resolution text is accessible through the Flemish Parliament’s official website.

Meanwhile, European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, reaffirmed the EU’s position in a European Parliament debate, stating: “Iran must halt the imminent execution of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani.” Her comments reflect mounting concern across EU institutions about Iran’s increasing use of the death penalty against political prisoners.

Human rights groups and activists across Europe have mobilized around hashtags like #StopExecutionsInIran, #SaveMehdiHassani, and #SaveBehrouzEhsani, urging the international community to act without delay.

As international pressure intensifies, the Flemish Parliament’s resolution underscores a broader demand for accountability and human rights in Iran—calling for urgent diplomatic action to save two lives now hanging in the balance.
