UN Special Rapporteur on Iran Urges International Community To Call For Accountability Over Arbitrary Executions of 1988 and November 2019 Protests

In his report to the forty-ninth session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), Dr. Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, wrote about the concerns of violations of human rights imposed by the Iranian regime on the people of Iran. The imposition of the death penalty, arbitrary deprivation of life, arbitrary detention, restrictions on freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, the right to an adequate standard of living and the situation of women and minorities were subjects focused on in his report.

Dr. Rehman’s report provides an overview of some of the most pressing human rights concerns in Iran and examines key obstacles to accountability for gross violations of human rights.

Dr. Rehman’s wrote urged the international community to call for accountability in Iran over emblematic events that have been met with persistent impunity, including the enforced disappearances and summary and arbitrary executions of 1988 and the November 2019 protests.
