Washington, June 20, 2025 – In Washington, DC, the Organization of Iranian American Communities (OIAC) held a powerful photo exhibition on the U.S. National Mall on June 20 and 21, commemorating the 44th anniversary of the nationwide protests in Iran on June 20, 1981. On that day, Khomeini gave the order to open fire on peaceful demonstrators, resulting in dozens of deaths, hundreds of injuries and thousands of arrests. The same evening, mass executions began. June 20, 1981 marked the beginning of the violent repression that has plagued Iran ever since. It also marked the beginning of resistance to religious dictatorship.
The exhibition honored thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the fight against tyranny, both under the former Shah and the current clerical regime.
