UN Side Event Highlights Iran’s Human Rights Abuses and Surge in Executions

On March 13, 2025, during the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, a conference at the UN’s European headquarters in Geneva addressed Iran’s escalating human rights violations, particularly the surge in executions. Political figures, legal experts, former prisoners, and families of executed dissidents attended the event, calling for global accountability.

Speakers emphasized the need for firm international action against the Iranian regime, citing the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners and ongoing state repression.

Key discussions included:

Kirsty Brimelow, former Chair of the Bar of England and Wales Human Rights Committee, highlighted Iran’s mass executions and lack of accountability, urging the preservation of evidence for future trials.

Claude Nicati, former Swiss Deputy Attorney General, linked Iran’s unchecked past crimes—such as the assassination of human rights advocate Dr. Kazem Rajavi—to its continued repression, warning of further executions without global intervention.

Sahar Sanaii, a women’s rights advocate, detailed the regime’s targeted violence against women, emphasizing their resilience in the fight for democracy.

Senator Roberto Rampi condemned Iran’s use of hostage diplomacy, warning that Western appeasement fuels the regime’s impunity.

Behrooz Maqsoudi, who lost family members to Iran’s executions, stressed the importance of international advocacy against capital punishment.

Behzad Naziri, NCRI Foreign Affairs Committee member, drew parallels between the 1988 massacre and today’s executions, urging the renewal of the UN Special Rapporteur’s mandate on Iran.

The conference concluded with a strong call for decisive diplomatic and legal actions against the regime to prevent further human rights abuses.
